A Note on the Painting
Worth knowing what's on your nightstand. The Starry Night was painted by Vincent van Gogh in June 1889, from the window of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in southern France - a view he could partly see and partly invented. The swirling sky, the blazing stars and moon, the cypress tree rising like a flame: none of it is a literal landscape. It's a painted mind. Van Gogh sold almost nothing in his lifetime; the painting now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is one of the most reproduced images ever made. Lighting your room with it is a small joke with a long history - and a reminder that the most famous sky in art was painted by someone who couldn't sleep either.
